The gap we were built to sit in
There is a familiar gap in the market. At one end sit the large consultancies, real capability, but a commercial model that means the seniors who won the work are rarely the people delivering it. At the other end sit freelancers and small shops, often excellent, but without the depth to carry a platform through security review, scale and handover.
Steganox was built to sit in between: senior engineers who stay on the project, with enough structure behind them to handle compliance, infrastructure and long-term support. Small enough that you know everyone working on your product; organised enough that a holiday or a resignation does not derail your roadmap.
We work across fintech, healthcare, commerce, SaaS and industrial software. A number of engagements are under NDA and cannot be listed publicly, which is usually a good sign about the kind of systems involved.

Say the hard thing early
A problem raised in week two is a conversation. The same problem raised in week ten is a crisis. We would rather have the awkward call.
Build it to be handed over
Every system we write is written on the assumption that somebody else will maintain it. That constraint improves the code.
Simple beats clever
Clever code is a liability the day the person who wrote it moves on. We optimise for the engineer reading it in two years.
Scope honestly
We would rather lose a deal than win it on a number we know is wrong. The client who was told the truth comes back.

The estimate holds because we earn it first
We work out what the job actually involves before we put a number on it, never the other way round. If something moves, you hear it in that week's demo with a correction attached. Not in month four.

Most clients arrive with the answer already picked. Our first job is checking it is the right one. Several hired us to build one thing and shipped something better.
Handover is designed in, not bolted on

The brief is a hypothesis
Almost everyone arrives with the answer already chosen. Sometimes it is right. Often the real problem sits a layer down, and building the stated thing is an expensive way to discover that.

Boring technology is an advantage
Spend your novelty budget on the part that makes you money. Databases, auth and payments should be so unremarkable nobody on your team thinks about them again.

Software is a liability until it ships
Code that has not deployed has cost you money and returned nothing. We ship fortnightly so the return starts before the project ends.

The handover is the product
We write every system assuming someone else will maintain it. That constraint makes the code better. It also means you are never trapped with us.

An estimate is a promise
A number given to win work and revised later is not an estimate. It is marketing. We would rather lose the deal than win it on a figure we already know is wrong.

Every feature is a permanent maintenance cost. If it won't pay for itself, saying so is worth more to you than the hours we'd have billed building it.
